SolarMan field guidance

A battery is part of a system.

Doug Mycko reviews the complete design before recommending a battery—not just the advertised kilowatt-hours.

1

Start with real loads

Daily energy use establishes storage capacity. Surge loads and simultaneous appliances establish the inverter and discharge-current requirements.

2

Verify compatibility

Confirm voltage, current, firmware, protocol, cabling, and minimum battery quantity for the selected inverter. Closed-loop communication is useful, but properly designed open-loop systems remain appropriate in many applications.

3

Size the charging sources

The solar array, charge controllers, inverter charging, and generator charging must stay within the battery manufacturer’s limits while providing adequate recovery.

Hawaii installations need a location review.

Indoor versus outdoor rating, salt air, rain exposure, heat, airflow, wall strength, equipment clearance, transport, and service access can change the best battery choice.

Let Doug size the battery bank.
